Increasingly we are encouraged to align our research bids with 'research priority areas' and 5 year strategy etc. If the university is planning in this strategic way, they should also be investing similarly. @UCU should push for investment in research staff according to priority areas and long-term strategies. That is the university plans, and therefore expects, to be doing research in particular areas, and will seek funding accordingly. University should consider staff development on this basis, and this would be consistent with longer-term contracts. Similarly annual #PDPR performance monitoring is not helpful when job contracts will terminate before the next review. With a long-term contract a performance review would be appropriate, and career development and mentoring would be meaningful.
